While technology marches forward with promises of innovation and progress, AI systems are silently erasing cultural identities across the globe. These machines, trained primarily on English data, churn out content that marginalizes non-English languages and experiences. They don't just ignore other cultures—they actively erase them. Nice job, Silicon Valley.

The problem runs deep. AI can now seamlessly alter images, voices, and speeches, distorting historical facts with terrifying ease. Yesterday's truth becomes today's manipulation. Cultural memory? Collective knowledge? Both threatened by algorithms that don't know better and developers who should. The resulting AI-generated content neglects minority languages and dialects, creating a narrowed cultural perspective that's about as diverse as a beige wall. Modern AI systems operate as black box algorithms, making their cultural biases nearly impossible to identify or correct.

This erasure happens through what experts call "symbolic annihilation"—the omission, trivialization, or simplification of specific peoples' histories. AI systems reduce complex cultures to stereotyped caricatures. Islam becomes just a mosque. Ancient traditions become tourist trinkets. It's cultural homogenization at machine speed. Undigitized knowledge such as oral traditions and local wisdom faces an even greater risk of extinction.

The appropriation doesn't stop there. AI mimics music, art, and cultural expressions without understanding context or showing respect. It commodifies heritage. It falsifies authenticity. The resulting cultural appropriation is often unavoidable due to the copyright ownership rules established by the US Copyright Office in 2022, which make true source acknowledgment nearly impossible. The result? Meaningful cultural significance gets diluted faster than cheap juice.

Regulation faces massive hurdles. Different countries, different standards. No global agreement. How do you enforce cultural sensitivity in systems designed by people who think diversity means having both an iPhone and an iPad?

The consequences are real. English dominance in AI creates an Anglophonisation bias that pushes non-English linguistic experiences to the margins. Cultural bias in AI output risks homogenizing global identities until we're all consuming the same flattened, algorithm-approved version of humanity.

We need diverse sources, ethical guidelines, and rigorous regulation to preserve what makes us different. Otherwise, we're just training machines to make us all the same. How boring would that be?
