While universities across the country grapple with AI's role in education, Ohio State is taking a bold step forward. Starting Fall 2025, every single undergraduate at the Columbus campus will be required to complete AI training. No exceptions. The university's new "AI Fluency Initiative" means that freshman students must take an AI course as part of their General Education Launch Seminar. By the time the Class of 2029 graduates, they'll all be AI-literate. Whether they like it or not.
The mandatory course, ironically titled "Unlocking Generative AI," will teach students across all disciplines how to use AI tools. Business majors, future doctors, aspiring poets – doesn't matter. Everyone's getting the AI treatment. The university is dead serious about preparing students for a future where AI touches literally every job sector. Students will also participate in GenAI workshops integrated into their First Year Seminar Series.
Faculty aren't off the hook either. Ohio State is pushing professors to embed AI concepts throughout the curriculum. They've launched teaching endorsement programs and resources through the Michael V. Drake Institute. The institution will provide substantial financial and advisory support to help instructors adapt their courses for AI integration. Similar to IBM's AI course, the program aims to reach hundreds of thousands of learners with content ranging from basic concepts to advanced applications.
Teachers who've been avoiding technology for decades? Time's up.
What about ethics? Ohio State claims that's covered too. Students will learn about responsible AI use, security concerns, and societal impacts. Because nothing says "ethical consideration" like mandatory training for 45,000 undergraduates simultaneously.
The initiative extends beyond campus. Local small business owners can access online, self-paced courses to learn AI applications. OSU is spreading the AI gospel far and wide.
Will it work? The university plans to find out. They're conducting ongoing research on how AI affects student learning, with the initial evaluation report due December 2025. The entire program is basically one massive experiment.
One thing's certain – Ohio State isn't waiting around while other universities debate AI's place in education. They're charging ahead at full speed. Ready or not, here comes AI fluency. The future arrives in Fall 2025, and attendance is mandatory.
