While most nations are still figuring out what AI even means, the UAE has charged ahead with a massive push to dominate Arabic-language artificial intelligence. They're not playing around.
Dubai Media Academy's AI Initiative in Arab Media, launched during Dubai AI Week 2025, is tackling problems most tech giants haven't bothered with: Arabic dialects, cultural context in AI visuals, and the pathetic shortage of Arabic training data.
It's about time someone did this. Arabic speakers number in the hundreds of millions, yet they've been virtual afterthoughts for decades. Not anymore. The UAE is connecting media pros with cutting-edge Arabic AI applications to revolutionize content production. Basic stuff for English speakers. Revolutionary for Arabic.
They're going all in. Sharjah completed the Historical Dictionary of Arabic Language – not just any reference book, but the backbone of Arabic AI development. Now they've turned it into "GPT Historical Dictionary," giving AI systems access to over 20 million Arabic words. Think about that. Twenty million.
The telecom sector isn't sitting this one out either. Du launched the first Arabic-language telecom large language model, partnering with heavy hitters like Microsoft and Nokia. Built entirely in the UAE. For the UAE. No outsourcing here, folks. With data privacy concerns growing worldwide, the local development ensures better protection of Arabic users' information.
Perhaps most impressive is "Jais," developed by the Mohamed bin Zayed University of AI and G42. Named after the UAE's tallest mountain – subtle symbolism there. While Silicon Valley obsesses over English and Latin scripts, the UAE is building powerhouse models for a language spoken across 22 countries.
The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation is backing virtual Arabic knowledge too, with platforms hosting over 800,000 titles and 8.5 million digital items. That's serious investment.
The UAE isn't just participating in the AI revolution. They're ensuring Arabic won't be left behind. Again. In a virtual environment dominated by English, they're making sure Arabic speakers get a seat at the table. Front row. A foundational white paper titled "Status of Artificial Intelligence in Arab Media" has been released to guide future development and research in this critical space.
Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre's specialized digital Arabic-English dictionary employs AI to cover over 7,000 core modern terms with automated features that provide simplified definitions, examples, and grammatical classifications.
